P0440 P0441 P0446 Fault Diagnosis for 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder After Gas Tank Access and Shifter Cable Replacement

Model: 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder Fault Code: P0440 Posted: 2008-05-02 17:34

My mechanic friend and I recently replaced the shifter cable on my 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder. To access the cable, we had to remove the gas tank — a process that was quite challenging. After reassembling the vehicle, the car would crank but not start. Upon inspection of the top of the fuel tank, we discovered that a wire had come loose on the fuel pressure regulator side during removal. Reconnecting this wire allowed the engine to start normally. However, after driving for about one day, the check engine light illuminated. The fault codes displayed are P0440 (Evaporative Emission System Malfunction), P0441 (Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected), and P0446 (Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor Circuit). Given that the gas tank was removed and wiring was disturbed, we suspect a disruption in the evaporative emissions system. Any insights or troubleshooting steps for these specific codes on this model would be greatly appreciated.

Removing the fuel tank likely caused an evaporation emissions issue — possibly by pinching a hose, misconnecting a valve, or leaving a sensor or wire unplugged. These actions can trigger P0440, P0441, and P0446 codes on the 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder due to improper EVAP system integrity.
