2000 Ford Taurus P0741 Code: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Issue - What Does It Mean & Can I Fix It Cheaply?

Model: 2000 Taurus Fault Code: P0741 Posted: 2008-01-18 16:49

I own a 2000 Ford Taurus with 64,000 miles and a 6-cylinder engine. After driving approximately 100 miles at highway speed, the transmission warning light begins flashing. I pull over and wait for 20 minutes—after that, the light turns off. The OBD2 code P0741 does not store in memory when checked. While the light is flashing, the system reads P0741: 'Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Circuit Performance or Stuck Off'. There are no noticeable driving issues such as slipping or poor acceleration. I’ve noticed that transmission fluid appears to be burning during these episodes. What exactly does this code mean? I've been told a full transmission rebuild could cost up to $2000—does that seem excessive? Are there other possible causes or cheaper fixes? Is it safe to simply change the transmission fluid? Thanks for any insight! -Jes

Range sensors are a common failure point on 2000 Taurus models. If this sensor isn’t functioning properly, the transmission won't engage the torque converter clutch (TCC). It's important to verify the electrical side of the system—however, transmission repairs should be handled by qualified professionals.

Thanks for the reply! Is it safe to change my 'burnt' transmission fluid? I've heard conflicting advice—some say doing so could worsen problems, while others believe it's harmless. Any guidance on this would be appreciated.

If you're not planning to have a professional inspect the vehicle, then changing the fluid is probably safe—but only as a temporary measure.

I've taken my Taurus to two different transmission shops. One said I need a new torque converter and internal repairs. The other read code P0741 (no driving issues) and claimed the clutches are slipping inside the transmission—requiring a full rebuild. I'm now planning to ask both shops about their sensor diagnostics and test procedures.

P0741 is very common on Taurus and Windstar models. There are around 15 possible causes for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC), ranging from stuck valves or damaged springs to worn bushings, shafts, seals, or torque converter issues. As Jeff mentioned, range sensors typically don’t trigger P0741—so it's essential to perform a full transmission diagnosis to narrow down the root cause. If you're not going to have a trusted professional inspect it, at least consider changing the fluid. However, when removing the pan for oil and filter replacement, take note of any debris in the fluid—it could indicate internal wear.
