2000 Tahoe LT ABS Fault Codes C0221, C0222, C0223, C0265, C0267, C0287, C0298 - Causes and Fixes

Model: 2000 Tahoe Fault Code: C0221 Posted: 2015-07-12 11:25

I own a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe LT with a 5.3L V8 engine and 2WD, equipped with traction control. The ABS light has illuminated and remains on continuously. After taking the vehicle to AutoZone for a diagnostic scan, the following ABS-related fault codes were detected: - C0221: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Open - C0222: Right Front Wheel Speed Signal Missing - C0223: Right Front Wheel Speed Signal Erratic - C0265: EBCM Motor Relay Circuit Issue - C0267: Pump Motor Circuit Open (confirmed in prior discussions) - C0287: Delivered Torque Signal Malfunction - C0298: Powertrain Control System Malfunction I recently installed 26-inch wheels on the truck as a DIY modification. I'm concerned whether this change could have triggered or contributed to these ABS errors. The speedometer is currently reading approximately 3–5 mph off, which led me to consider adjusting tire size settings in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or EBCM. I would appreciate any advice on how to resolve these codes and whether my wheel upgrade played a role in causing the ABS issues.

Did you experience any of these ABS errors before installing the new wheels? Yes, it's possible that aftermarket wheels can interfere with ABS functionality. The tire and wheel shop should have informed you about reprogramming the speedometer and updating the PCM/EBCM with the correct tire size. At minimum, a speedometer recalibration is required. Here’s what each code indicates: - C0221: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Open - C0222: Right Front Wheel Speed Signal Missing - C0223: Right Front Wheel Speed Signal Erratic - C0265: EBCM Motor Relay Circuit Issue - C0267: Pump Motor Circuit Open (as previously noted) - C0287: Delivered Torque Signal Malfunction - C0298: Powertrain Control System Malfunction Recommendation: Prioritize addressing C0265 and the right front wheel sensor issues before seeking professional help, as these are more accessible for DIYers. However, resolving the final two codes—especially C0287 and C0298—will likely require advanced diagnostic tools and specialized technician support.

Hi Kev, thanks for the response. I did the wheel installation myself. I was hoping to do a similar modification on my own because my speedometer is currently off by about 3–5 mph. I didn’t realize that such changes could affect ABS performance or trigger these codes. This has been helpful in understanding the potential impact of aftermarket wheels.

A practical approach: start with resolving C0265 and the right front wheel sensor issues—these are more manageable for a DIYer. Only after that should you consider professional help, as codes like C0287 and C0298 require high-end diagnostic equipment and specialized knowledge to interpret and fix accurately.
