2000 Chevy S10 P0452 and P0453 Codes: Fuel Pump Issue After Replacement at 120,000 Miles
I own a 2000 Chevrolet S10 with a 4.3L engine and have reached approximately 120,000 miles. About six months ago, I had to replace the entire fuel pump assembly—my mechanic stated that the pump itself cannot be purchased separately and must be replaced as a complete unit. Since then, the truck has run and started reliably with no major issues. However, the check engine light would occasionally illuminate and then go off on its own. Recently, after a short drive in town, the vehicle started normally but died after just one minute of idle. Now, when I try to start it, the engine cranks but will not turn over. When turning the ignition key to the 'ON' position, I can hear the fuel pump running. However, using a fuel pressure gauge on the Schraeder valve, I'm only reading 15 psi—significantly below the expected range of 55–60 psi. The onboard diagnostic system has returned two error codes: P0452 (EVAP Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor - Low Input) and P0453 (EVAP Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor - High Input). I suspect a problem with my aftermarket fuel pump assembly, possibly related to the sensor or internal failure. However, since I can hear the pump running when the key is in the 'ON' position, I'm hesitant to replace it immediately. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Make sure the fuel filter isn't clogged. Inspect all fuel lines and connectors for damage or crushing. Does your pump come with a warranty? Are you using an aftermarket scanner? If so, can it command the fuel pump on/off? If yes, try turning it off to see if pressure drops significantly. What is the flow rate output of the pump under load?
