2000 Mustang V6 P0401 Code: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient - Diagnosis and Fix

Model: 2000 Mustang V6 Fault Code: P0401 Posted: 2005-08-22 21:33

Hello, I own a 2000 Mustang V6 with 87,000 miles. I recently picked up the P0401 diagnostic code using an OBD-II scanner. The vehicle runs roughly when cold and exhibits detonation or pinging during hard acceleration, especially when climbing hills. Initially, I suspected a clogged fuel filter and replaced it—however, the symptoms persisted and the check engine light remained on. After acquiring a code reader, I confirmed the P0401 fault: 'Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected'. I'm looking for input from other owners of 2000 Mustang V6 models who have encountered this issue. Has anyone successfully resolved the P0401 code? What were the root causes and solutions? Thanks, Jeff

Welcome Jeff! As a longtime Mustang enthusiast, I've owned two models—my 1982 and 1986 Mustangs. For detailed guidance on P0401, check out this trusted resource: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0401

Thanks for the link! I spoke with a friend who's worked at a Ford dealership for over 10 years. He mentioned that approximately 90% of P0401 codes he’s seen in service are caused by a failing DPFE (Differential Pressure Feedback Emission) sensor. I already checked my PCV valve and inspected the valve cover—no signs of oil contamination, which is common in 1999–2000 V6 Mustangs with faulty valve covers. So I’m now planning to replace the DPFE sensor. Unfortunately, major auto parts stores like Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilly, and AutoZone don’t carry the correct part for my vehicle’s year, make, and model—so I’ll have to order it directly from a dealership. Thanks again for this helpful site; I’ve bookmarked it. I’m sure many members and visitors find this forum invaluable during troubleshooting moments.

Update: I replaced the DPFE sensor tonight. The knocking or pinging under load has completely disappeared. I’ll still need to verify whether the cold-start roughness persists, but at least one major symptom is resolved. During installation, I noticed that the hoses connected to the sensor were difficult to remove and showed partial clogging—though not fully blocked—and there was also buildup on the sensor’s inlet ports. This experience may help others facing similar P0401 issues with their 2000 Mustang V6.
