2000 Mercury Villager P0325 and P0340 Codes: Knock Sensor and Camshaft Position Sensor Failure Symptoms

Model: 2000 Mercury Villager Fault Code: P0325 Posted: 2011-06-27 20:13

My 2000 Mercury Villager is showing two diagnostic trouble codes: P0325 (Knock Sensor Circuit Malfunction) and P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction). The vehicle began stalling and running roughly while driving, eventually stalling completely after about a mile. After towing it home, it starts but runs poorly and continues to stall intermittently. I'm wondering if there's a direct connection between these two sensors. The camshaft position sensor is integrated into the distributor, which leads me to believe that replacing the distributor may resolve the issue. However, why would both the knock sensor and camshaft sensor fail simultaneously? Are they related in function or design? Any insights on whether these codes are linked or if one component failure could trigger the other?

The distributor on the 2000 Mercury Villager is a known common failure point. Regarding the P0325 knock sensor code, many vehicles with similar engine designs log this code during scans but do not experience actual performance issues—often indicating it's a false positive or non-critical fault.

I've confirmed that both codes appear twice in the diagnostic logs for each reading, which may indicate a repeated detection rather than a single event. This suggests the issue might be intermittent and could point to a failing sensor or wiring problem—replacing the distributor is a reasonable first step.

Agreed — the symptoms align with sensor failure, especially given the stalling behavior.

Found a reliable replacement distributor for under $235 including parts and labor—worth considering if the issue persists after initial checks.
