2000 Mercury Sable Cylinder 4 Misfire: How to Identify and Fix Without Replacing All Wiring

Model: 2000 Mercury Sable Fault Code: P0304 Posted: 2009-01-14 20:15

I recently started experiencing a flashing check engine light on my 2000 Mercury Sable, which the diagnostic scan revealed as a cylinder 4 misfire. I've already replaced the spark plugs, air filter, and recently installed a new coil pack, but I'm unsure about the correct cylinder numbering for this model. Does cylinder 4 correspond to position 1-2-3 on the rear bank and 4-5-6 on the front, or is there a specific layout for the 2000 Mercury Sable V8 engine? Additionally, if the issue isn't with the coil, could it be the spark plug wire connector? Can I replace just that component without having to rewire all the ignition system?

For Ford and Mercury V8 engines like the 2000 Mercury Sable, cylinders are typically numbered 1-2-3 on the right side (driver's side) and 4-5-6 on the left side (passenger side), with cylinder 4 located on the passenger side. So in your case, cylinder 4 is on the left bank. Regarding the spark plug wire connector: while a pigtail connector can be sourced from Ford for coil replacement, if the issue were solely due to a faulty wire, it would typically trigger a primary coil circuit fault code—though this does not always happen. Therefore, misfire codes may point more directly to the coil or ignition timing rather than just the wiring.
