2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee P0320 Fault: Engine Dies When Slowing Down or Stopping

Model: 2000 Jeep Fault Code: P0320 Posted: 2015-03-17 14:33

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some help with a recurring issue on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle suddenly dies when I'm slowing down or coming to a complete stop. A diagnostic scan consistently shows fault code P0320. I've already replaced the crankshaft position sensor and installed a new battery, but the problem persists. My mechanic has been unable to identify any further issues. Since this is the only fault code appearing, I'm hoping for some expert insight on what could be causing this behavior. Any advice or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Could you confirm which engine model you have? Is it a 4.0L gasoline engine? Knowing the exact engine type is critical for diagnosing P0320, as this code relates to crankshaft position sensor issues and can vary by engine design. Also, are there any modifications or recent repairs done to the vehicle? This information could help narrow down potential causes.

Yes, it's a 4.0L gasoline engine. The vehicle is stock with no modifications or recent changes made to the drivetrain or engine components.

Thanks for confirming — P0320 on a 4.0L Jeep is not uncommon, but still requires careful diagnosis. Try shifting into neutral when slowing down or stopping; this can sometimes prevent stalling and may indicate an issue with the transmission or sensor signal during deceleration.
