How to Fix PO181 Fuel Temperature Sensor on 2000 Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe

Model: 2000 Honda Accord Fault Code: P0181 Posted: 2008-08-27 21:56

Hi everyone, I'm trying to pass my smog test and the check engine light is on. A mechanic used an OBD-II scanner and found two codes: PO181 (Fuel Temperature Sensor Circuit Range/Performance) and PO401 (EGR Flow Insufficient). I have a 2000 Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe with approximately 78,000 miles. I'm wondering if replacing the fuel temperature sensor is enough to fix the PO181 code. Is this a simple replacement or do I need more work? Also, for the PO401 issue, can I just clean the EGR system to bypass it temporarily? Any advice on how to properly diagnose and fix these codes would be greatly appreciated—especially since I'm short on time before my smog test. Thanks in advance!

PO181 is reportedly an undocumented code from Honda, with limited official documentation available. There's no direct factory guidance for this specific issue. For the PO401 EGR flow problem, Honda offers a complete EGR repair kit that includes all necessary gaskets, a new EGR valve, and a replacement pipe to install into the EGR passage. The process involves removing the intake plenum and flipping it upside down. On the throttle body side, you'll find a clogged EGR passage—this requires drilling out the blockage and installing the new pipe. This repair is commonly performed in Georgia and typically costs around $100 for the full kit.
