2000 Ford Focus P0455 Code: Evaporative Emission System Leak Diagnosis

Model: 2000 Ford Focus Fault Code: P0455 Posted: 2010-05-14 22:32

My 2000 Ford Focus has been sitting idle for over two years. I recently brought it out to start driving again after using my 1986 Jeep Comanche for the past couple of months. However, due to poor fuel economy and rising California gas prices, I'm now ready to drive the Focus. After passing smog inspection, the check engine light came on. The vehicle is displaying a P045

The P0455 diagnostic code indicates an Evaporative Emission Control System Leak (gross leak) in OBD II-compliant vehicles, including the 2000 Ford Focus. Evaporative emissions are gasoline vapors that escape from the fuel tank and are stored in a charcoal canister before being routed to the intake manifold for combustion. A 'gross leak' means these fumes are not properly contained within the system. First, check the tightness of the gas cap after your last fill-up. A loose cap is one of the most common causes of this code. Remove and reseat the cap fully—rotate it as far back as possible until you hear a distinct click. For proper sealing, turn it slightly more to ensure additional clicks are heard. Next, inspect all rubber hoses connecting the fuel tank to the charcoal canister and from there to the intake manifold. Look for any holes, cracks, or damage—rodent gnawing is a common issue in older vehicles. If you're comfortable with basic tools and automotive systems, refer to your vehicle's shop manual to locate the correct hose routing for accurate inspection.
