2000 Ford Focus P0303 P0304 P0171 P0172 P1132 - Engine Stalls, Loses Power on Warm Days
2000 Ford Focus 2.0L MFI DOHC 4-cylinder, 184,000 miles My 2000 Ford Focus is experiencing intermittent power loss and stalling, especially on warm days (air temperature above 70°F). It drives smoothly for a while before beginning to sputter, forcing me to reduce speed. The vehicle occasionally recovers briefly but eventually continues to sputter until it stalls completely—sometimes even dying at idle. This issue worsens over time and becomes dangerous when it occurs in traffic. I have observed the following diagnostic trouble codes: P0303, P0304, P0171, P0172, and P1132. I've already tried cleaning fuel injectors with Sea Foam Fuel Injector Cleaner and 92 octane gasoline twice. I've also replaced key components including the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs and wires, distributor/rotor (ignition coil), mass airflow sensor, and both pre- and post-catalytic converter oxygen sensors. Leaving the hood open or turning off the AC has provided temporary relief, but once the engine begins to lose power, these factors no longer make a difference. The problem is getting progressively worse and I'm concerned about safety due to potential stalling in heavy traffic. What could be causing this? Any insights into how to diagnose or fix P0303, P0304, P0171, P0172, and P1132 on a 2000 Ford Focus?
Perform a fuel pressure test and monitor the drop in pressure with the key off (KOEO). Check for vacuum leaks downstream of the MAF sensor, including mating surfaces, hoses, and tubing. Are there any EGR-related codes or history of EGR issues in your vehicle's past?
