2000 Ford F250SD 7.3L Diesel: PCM Communication Failure with DTCs P1280, P0472, P0237, P1690, P0231, P0603, P0470

Model: 2000 f250SD Fault Code: P0231 Posted: 2018-05-07 20:58

Hi everyone, I'm currently troubleshooting a communication issue with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on my 2000 Ford F250SD 7.3L diesel engine. I'm unable to establish a connection using a VMM2 scan tool, and no modules are responding—despite confirming that all fuses are intact. I've tested the OBD-II port voltage and it appears normal. However, when using an older scan tool, I can retrieve several Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): P1280, P0472, P0237, P1690, P0231, P0603, and P0470. These codes are primarily related to a recent battery disconnection event. The puzzling part is that the older scan tool also fails to communicate with the PCM, yet it still retrieves these DTCs. I'm unsure how it accesses them—could they be stored in the PCM or possibly the Body Control Module (BCM)? Could anyone provide insight into whether this points to a faulty PCM, BCM, or another underlying issue? Thanks for any advice! Craig

The DTCs retrieved—P1280, P0472, P0237, P1690, P0231, P0603, and P0470—are all related to a battery disconnect event. These codes typically indicate that the vehicle's power system was interrupted, which can cause the PCM to store fault data even after reconnection. However, since both the VMM2 and older scan tool fail to communicate with the PCM, this suggests a potential issue with the PCM itself or its communication interface, possibly due to internal failure or corrupted memory. The BCM may not be the primary source of these codes, as they are primarily stored in the PCM.
