2000 Eclipse P0740 Fault: Transmission Enters Fail Safe After Initial Shifts

Model: 2000 Eclipse Fault Code: P0740 Posted: 2015-03-27 19:24

My 2000 Dodge Eclipse is showing check engine light with fault code P0740. The vehicle shifts normally for the first two minutes after starting, but then the transmission abruptly enters fail-safe mode. It appears to be stuck in third gear and accelerates very slowly from a stop. At 65 mph, the RPM reads around 4000, indicating poor gear engagement. This behavior suggests a transmission control issue related to the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) circuit. I'm seeking advice on how to diagnose and resolve this problem without unnecessary disassembly.

TCC Circuit Malfunction. Check wiring, connector, etc. as well as the solenoid itself.

What connector do I need to check?

Where the wiring connects to the solenoid. Got a manual?

No, I don't have a service manual. Is it the connector located next to the shift linkage?

The solenoid connector typically has red/blue and yellow/red wires.

I've already inspected all wiring and connectors—no visible damage or disconnections. How can I test the solenoid without removing the transmission pan?

Can I test the solenoid for failure using a multimeter or diagnostic tool without dropping the transmission pan?

Also consider checking the two gear sensors on the transmission—malfunction in these can cause similar fail-safe behavior.
