2000 Dodge Truck P0216 Fault: Sudden Throttle Loss with Full Power Return After 4-5 Minutes
My 2000 Dodge truck starts and idles smoothly, but when I attempt to drive shortly after starting (within a few minutes), I experience complete loss of throttle — the engine only runs at about 4–5 RPM above idle. After approximately 4 to 5 minutes of driving, throttle returns fully and power is restored abruptly, like a switch being flipped rather than a gradual recovery. This behavior occurs in both cold and hot weather conditions. I previously had both the lift pump and injector pump replaced around five years ago at a Dodge dealership, where technicians noted that a failing lift pump can lead to injector pump failure. I also replaced the crankshaft position sensor several years prior — well before this issue began. Despite troubleshooting various components, including fuel filter, MAP sensor, and injector timing modules, the problem persists. The fault code P0216 (VP44 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure) appears consistently in my vehicle's diagnostic history. This intermittent throttle loss is not gradual; it switches on/off suddenly, which I haven't seen reported in other forums. The issue occurs regardless of engine temperature or driving conditions. Any insights into potential causes or diagnostics for this specific P0216-related throttle behavior would be greatly appreciated.
I have the same symptom on my 1998 24V Cummins. The lift pump and injector pump were both replaced, fuel filter and MAP sensor were serviced — still experience limp mode. A friend suggested it might be related to the injector timing control module. I'm not sure, but it's a possibility worth investigating.
