I also replaced the crankshaft position sensor several years prior — well before this issue began. Despite troubleshooting various components, including fuel filter, MAP sensor, and injector timing modules, the problem persists. The fault code P0216 (VP44 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure) appears consistently in my vehicle's diagnostic history. I have the same symptom on my 1998 24V Cummins. The lift pump and injector pump were both replaced, fuel filter and MAP sensor were serviced — still experience limp mode. A friend suggested it might be related to the injector timing control module. I'm not sure, but it's a possibility worth investigating.

Always check TSBs first — ensure your engine is stock with no aftermarket chips or modifications. DTC P0216: VP44 Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure Monitor & Set Conditions: - Monitored when ignition is on. - Sets when engine speed exceeds 300 RPM, fuel command reaches 5 mm³/str, and timing command falls within a specified window. Possible Causes: • Other DTCs present (e.g., P0336, P1287, P1690) • Incorrect fuel injection pump gear alignment • Clogged fuel filter • Restricted transfer pump inlet • Fuel injection pump failure Diagnostic Steps: 1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Use DRBIII(R) scan tool to check for DTCs. If P0336, P1287, or P1690 are present, diagnose those first. 2. Observe FREEZE FRAME data using the scan tool. Attempt to replicate recorded conditions. Check for active DTCs. If Good Trip Counter resets to zero, proceed; otherwise, test is complete. 3. Turn ignition off and verify proper fuel injection pump timing and alignment of the drive gear (per ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS - RAM PICKUP - DIESEL).
