P0601 Fault Code Explanation and Solutions for 2000 Dodge Intrepid ES

Model: 2000 DODGE INTREPID ES Fault Code: P0601 Posted: 2016-12-13 15:50

I'm experiencing issues with my 2000 Dodge Intrepid ES, including vehicle shaking and jerking above 50 mph, as well as steering wheel vibration during braking. I'm wondering whether replacing the Engine Control Module (ECM) will resolve these drivability problems or if it only clears the P0601 diagnostic code and turns off the check engine light.

I'm experiencing similar issues with my 2000 Dodge Intrepid ES, including vehicle shaking and jerking above 50 mph, as well as steering wheel vibration during braking. Replacing the ECM is unlikely to fix all underlying drivability issues; it may only reset the P0601 code and eliminate the check engine light.

The primary effect of an ECM replacement would be clearing the P0601 code and turning off the check engine light during inspection — it does not guarantee resolution of shaking or jerking problems.

I own a 2002 Dodge Stratus sedan that has been showing P0601 since around 2010. Initially, the code was intermittent and could be cleared by disconnecting the battery. Over time, it became persistent without noticeable drivability issues. About six months ago, I noticed occasional idle instability — roughly every 5 to 8 seconds, with a sensation of one cylinder missing — though not severe. I've read that Chrysler ECMs can develop faults over time, but no official recalls have been issued. Notably, emissions performance has remained unaffected. I'm still deciding whether an ECM replacement is necessary and if there are affordable options available (local dealerships tend to charge excessively).

"Interestingly, emissions were not affected" — how can a vehicle pass emissions testing with a persistent P0601 hard code? Note: Several aftermarket ECM remanufacturers offer quick turnaround services. You can mail in your original unit, they will reprogram and ship the replacement same day — simply plug it in and drive.
