2000 Dodge Durango 5.9L - PO132 and PO75-3: Battery Drain, Alternator Issues, and Parasitic Draw Diagnosis

Model: 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9 Fault Code: P0753 Posted: 2014-12-04 22:16

I recently replaced both the alternator and battery on my 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9L, but now it's exhibiting a rough idle, spitting, and sputtering during operation. After researching common symptoms, I initially thought this might be normal post-replacement behavior. However, the vehicle shows signs of significant battery drain—especially in the morning when the battery is noticeably dead. To investigate, I replaced the alternator's pigtail connector, which was corroded and had a broken clip during removal. While waiting for that repair, I kept all electrical connections disconnected to prevent further drain. During this time, the rough idle, spitting, and sputtering symptoms significantly improved. Today, when I tried to crank the vehicle after visiting a friend, the battery was completely dead. This has led me to suspect several possibilities: could the high voltage detected in the PO132 and PO753 fault codes be causing excessive battery drain? Is the alternator still malfunctioning despite replacement? Or is there a parasitic electrical draw? I plan to use a multimeter tomorrow to test for parasitic drain and further diagnose whether the alternator or wiring system is at fault. Any insights from owners of 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9L with similar issues would be greatly appreciated.
