I own a 2000 Chevrolet Impala LS with a 3.8L engine and am currently experiencing a persistent P0440 diagnostic trouble code. On May 14, 2008, I was unable to fill up my vehicle, and the shop scanned it—confirming the same P0440 code. They replaced the EVAP solenoid, which resolved the issue temporarily until May 25, 2008. Since then, I’ve used a personal OBD-II scanner and continue to see the P0440 code. After clearing the code and reseating the gas cap, the problem has returned. I’m seeking reliable advice on further troubleshooting steps for this common issue in older Impala LS models. Any insights or proven fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Did the shop replace the purge solenoid under the hood or the one located near the fuel tank?

I had the valve near the fuel tank replaced. Should I also replace the solenoid under the hood as well?

I tightened the gas cap and reset the code, hoping that would fix it—no luck. This morning, the check engine light came back on. Now I’m fully committed to DIY repairs. I captured a freeze frame data set: P0440, fuel system status B1, using H02S; fuel system status B2 at 0%; calculated load at 13.72%; coolant temperature at 87°C; stoichiometric fuel trim B1 at -1.57%; intake manifold pressure at 61.00 kPa; engine speed at 1949.5 rpm; vehicle speed at 111.00 km/h; mass air flow at 24.11 g/s; throttle position at 9.01%. Can anyone explain what this means in simple terms? Is there a site that provides clear translations of OBD-II data?

I purchased a new gas cap and have ordered the purge solenoid located under the hood—what else should I try if this doesn’t resolve the issue?

Also inspect all EVAP hoses near the fuel tank and engine for looseness, blockages, or damage.

Update: After three weeks, I replaced both the purge solenoid under the hood and the gas cap. Total cost around $35. The issue is now resolved—no P0440 code appears, and the check engine light remains off.
