P0440 Fault Diagnosis for 2000 Chevrolet Tracker - EVAP System Issues at 121,000 Miles
Hi there, I own a 2000 Chevrolet Tracker with 121,000 miles on the odometer. Recently, my vehicle triggered a Service Engine Soon (SES) light, and the diagnostic scan revealed code P0440 — indicating an EVAP (Evaporative Emission Control) system malfunction. I've inspected the air filter housing and the EVAP canister area for loose connections or visible cracks, but no obvious issues were found. Given that this code is generic, what are the most common causes I should investigate? Any specific components or testing procedures you recommend? Thanks in advance for your insight.
The EVAP canister may have started to degrade, with its contents potentially clogging the purge and/or vent solenoids. The most reliable method is using a smoke machine along with an OBD2 scanner to test valve operation and detect leaks. However, it's also possible that the solenoids themselves are faulty — this requires verification using a scanner or a multimeter (DVOM) to confirm proper electrical opening and closing. Also, has any fuel pump work been performed recently? While I don't believe the 2000 Tracker uses an EVAP pressure sensor in the fuel pump, my knowledge of this model is limited.
