2000 Buick Lesabre 3.8L Engine Code P0341: Intermittent Misfire and Restart Issues

Model: 2000 Buick Lesabre Fault Code: P0341 Posted: 2014-08-14 11:48

I own a 2000 Buick Lesabre with a 3.8L engine, currently at 230,000 miles and regularly maintained. I recently received Diagnostic Code P0341, which indicates a problem with the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. I have already replaced the CMP sensor and the associated interrupt or magnet on the cam gear—both components were new and properly magnetized. The engine starts normally but begins to exhibit a slight misfire as it warms up. After about one minute, it experiences another quick misfire before dying. The vehicle will not restart for approximately 30 minutes before repeating the same cycle. I have cleared the P0341 code each time, and the symptoms reappear with the code returning immediately. This issue is severely impacting my daily driving. I am seeking advice on how to diagnose or resolve this intermittent fault. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Based on the trouble tree for P0341, an intermittent issue may stem from several potential causes: • A poor electrical connection, such as a wire with damaged insulation or internal breaks. • Malfunctioning ignition coil—remove and inspect the coils and ignition control module (ICM) for cracks, carbon tracking, or arcing to the ICM wiring harness. Refer to ICM replacement procedures. • Secondary ignition wires showing signs of damage or carbon tracking. • Damaged wiring harness—inspect the entire harness for physical damage or wear. If no visible damage is found, disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), turn the ignition on, and monitor a voltmeter connected to the CAM signal circuit at the PCM connector while manually moving connectors and harnesses related to the ICM and CMP sensor. A voltage fluctuation will help pinpoint the faulty component.

Thanks for the detailed response—I'll check all these points step by step and update with my findings once completed.

I recommend testing whether the issue persists after disconnecting the camshaft position sensor. If the problem disappears, it may indicate a faulty sensor or wiring related to its signal circuit.
