P0171, P0174, P0102 Fault Codes on 1999 Windstar LX 3.8L - Low Fuel Efficiency and Diagnosis Tips

Model: 1999 Windstar LX Fault Code: P0102 Posted: 2013-05-07 10:18

The check engine light is on, and I'm seeing three diagnostic trouble codes: P0171 (System Too Lean Bank 1), P0174 (System Too Lean Bank 2), and P0102 (Mass Airflow Sensor Circuit Low). Fuel efficiency has dropped dramatically to just 12 mpg. I recently cleaned the MAF sensor using an electronic cleaner, but the issue persists. I've been told that a voltmeter can be used to test the MAF sensor — does anyone have instructions or guidance on how to do this properly? Additionally, are there any other common causes or troubleshooting steps I should consider before assuming it's a MAF sensor failure?

Avoid using a digital voltmeter (DVM) to test the MAF sensor — unless you're certain it's an open circuit, this method is generally ineffective. Before blaming the MAF sensor due to these codes, always check for vacuum leaks, as they are a common cause of lean mixture conditions and can trigger P0171 and P0174.
