1999 Toyota RAV4 P1700 Diagnostic Code: Vehicle Speed Sensor 2 Circuit Explained

Model: 1999 Rav4 Fault Code: P1700 Posted: 2008-02-13 14:58

Hi everyone, I own a 1999 Toyota RAV4 with automatic transmission and recently received the P1700 diagnostic code. I've spoken to two mechanics—one said it's a transmission issue, the other claims it's related to the vehicle computer. Since I'm not very technical, both possibilities feel serious. I'd like to know what the actual cause is for this specific code and whether there are reliable steps to diagnose or fix it without costly repairs. Thanks in advance for any insights or advice!

The P1700 code in Toyota vehicles specifically refers to the Vehicle Speed Sensor 2 Circuit. This is a dealer-specific diagnostic code, and not all scan tools can detect it. I recommend getting a second opinion—ideally from an authorized dealership—to ensure accurate diagnosis. The initial suggestions of transmission or computer issues may be oversimplified.

I'm skeptical about the computer being at fault. If the ECU is receiving an incorrect or incomplete signal, it should still communicate that issue to the system. Since no other faults are present and the vehicle can still operate, the problem likely lies elsewhere—such as a faulty sensor rather than a failing control module.

From what I could find on alldata;which is kind of sketchy and this code was not listed. This car has 2 speed sensors. Speed sensor #1 goes to speedo and then to computer. Sensor #2 is a direct input to ecu. Thats all I could get in between phone calls and customers.

The P1700 code directly relates to Vehicle Speed Sensor #2—this is the key component that needs inspection and testing.
