1999 Oldsmobile Aurora Won't Start: P0440 EVAP Code After Running Out of Gas

One day while driving home, I ran out of gas and noticed my car began to sputter and jerk as I pulled over. I tried restarting it several times, but each time the engine would start and then die shortly after. I revved the engine a few times, which caused it to stall again. Eventually, a tow truck arrived. A couple of days later, I filled up with 5 gallons of gas in hopes of resolving the issue. I primed the fuel pump several times and attempted to start the car. It would crank but not start — there was no response from the gas pedal. Using an OBD2 scanner, I received fault code P0440 — EVAP System Malfunction. I suspect sediment at the bottom of the fuel tank may have been drawn into the fuel pump, though I'm not certain. Any insights or suggestions on how to diagnose or fix this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Is the fuel tank completely empty? Did the fuel gauge show zero? First step: check fuel pressure using a dedicated fuel pressure gauge. The reading should typically be between 50–55 psi at the rail. If pressure is low, it could indicate pump failure or clogged fuel lines. Once we confirm the engine can start properly, we can address the P0440 EVAP code.

A fuel gauge check is recommended as suggested by kev2. If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge, try this: Open the fuel door, remove the fuel cap, and have someone turn the key to the 'on' position without cranking the engine. Listen for the fuel pump priming sound — it should be audible for just a few seconds. While you may hear the pump running, low fuel pressure could still be present (ideal range: 50–55 psi at the rail). This test helps identify if the fuel system is responsive.
