P0505 Fault Diagnosis: How to Tell if It's the Idle Air Control Valve or Wire Harness in 1999 Nissan Sentra

Model: 1999 Nissan Sentra Fault Code: P0505 Posted: 2016-06-12 10:47

I'm experiencing a P0505 diagnostic trouble code on my 1999 Nissan Sentra, and I'm trying to determine whether the issue is caused by a faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or a malfunctioning wire harness. How can I properly diagnose which component is at fault? Any step-by-step guidance would be greatly appreciated.

To test the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC), begin by unplugging it and performing a KOEO (Key On, Engine Off) check. Verify if there is 12V present at IAC terminal 1 — this should be the BR wire according to the wiring diagram. Then, use a digital multimeter (DVOM) to measure the resistance of the IAC valve; a reading around 10Ω is typical for proper operation. If no voltage or an abnormal resistance is found, it may indicate a faulty IAC or damaged wiring.
