1999 Mercury Sable P1131 Check Engine Light - How to Fix Without Spending $150 on O2 Sensors?

Model: 1999 Mercury Sable Fault Code: P1131 Posted: 2006-11-20 18:31

My 1999 Mercury Sable has the check engine light on, and I've pulled code P1131. After researching, I've tried replacing the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and gas cap—both new—but the code returns every time after resetting. I’ve confirmed my spark plugs are not old, and the issue persists. Based on online resources, I believe there are only two oxygen (O2) sensors on this model year and trim. However, O2 sensors can be expensive (~$150 each), and I don’t want to spend that much if it’s not the actual cause. Before investing in a new sensor or taking it to a mechanic, what other troubleshooting steps should I try? Are there common issues like vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks near the O2 sensor (bank 1), or wiring problems after the MAF? I need to pass inspection and am looking for cost-effective solutions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check for a vacuum leak—especially around the intake system. Look for exhaust leaks near the O2 sensor on the back of the engine (bank 1). Ensure there are no air leaks after the MAF sensor. Inspect the PCV system for damage or blockages. Also verify that the O2 sensor and its connector are not physically damaged. Use a digital multimeter (DVOM) to test all related circuits and wiring for continuity and proper voltage.
