1998 Dodge Neon RT 2.0L - OBD2 Codes P0172 and P0340: Idle Dies, Requires Gas Hold to Start

Model: 1998 neon rt 2.0 Fault Code: P0172 Posted: 2009-10-30 21:57

My 1998 Dodge Neon RT 2.0L engine runs fine at high RPMs but occasionally dies when idling after stopping. To keep it running, I must hold the gas pedal down—this is especially noticeable during idle recovery. I've already replaced the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), ignition wires, fuel pump in tank, and camshaft position sensor with no improvement. The vehicle has been taken to a shop, but they were unable to resolve the issue. OBD2 diagnostic codes show P0172 (Rich Fuel Mix at Idle) and P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction). I'm now considering whether to continue troubleshooting or simply replace the engine. Any insights into potential root causes—especially related to wiring, sensor accuracy, fuel trim values, or cam timing? Has anyone experienced similar issues with this model?
