1998 Honda Civic LX P0170 and P0172 Codes: Causes and Fixes After Head Gasket and Radiator Repair

Model: 1998 Honda Civic LX Fault Code: P0170 Posted: 2007-10-27 13:56

I own a 1998 Honda Civic LX with all original, stock components. Recently, my car began overheating. I had the head gaskets, thermostat, and radiator replaced. The intake manifold was also cracked and repaired using soldering—though it was never fully replaced. After these repairs, the check engine light activated. A diagnostic scan revealed two trouble codes: P0170 (FUEL TRIM MALFUNCTION - BANK 1) and P017-2 (SYSTEM TOO RICH - BANK 1). I'm trying to understand what these codes mean, what components might be at fault, and how I can resolve them so the check engine light turns off. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

To diagnose this issue accurately, you should monitor the fuel trim values using a scan tool and share the live data readings—especially under different driving conditions like idle or acceleration.

Where can I find the fuel trim data from? Is it available through an OBD-II scanner?

Yes, fuel trim data is accessible via a dedicated OBD-II scan tool. Make sure to use one that supports live data streaming for accurate readings.
