1998 Dodge Ram Van 1500 B Series: P0463 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Issue - Stalling & Gauge Jumping?
I recently discovered the P0463 diagnostic trouble code on my 1998 Dodge Ram Van 1500 B Series station wagon with a 6-cylinder engine. The truck starts and runs for a short time before stalling unexpectedly. Additionally, the fuel gauge jumps erratically between empty and full when the tank is actually full. I've already completed a full tune-up including spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, air filter, and oil filter. Despite this, the issue persists. I recently ordered a complete fuel pump assembly for $250 (the dealer quoted $550 — quite expensive). My question is: does replacing just the fuel sending unit resolve both the stalling and the erratic fuel gauge behavior? Could there be another underlying cause? Is it possible that the wiring or grounding in the fuel sender circuit is faulty, especially since P0463 specifically points to a problem with the fuel level sensor circuit? Thank you for any insight — Joseph
No — the symptoms and P0460 code strongly suggest a wiring issue in the fuel sending unit circuit. Have there been any recent electrical modifications or additions? A scanner would help identify freeze frame data and actual voltage readings from the sender signal circuit. Do you have access to an OBD2 scanner? Can you use a digital multimeter (DVOM) to check wiring diagrams and signal voltages?
