1998 Dodge Neon P0117 and P0118: Engine Temperature Sensor Issue with Starting Problems and Gauge Failure

Hi everyone, I'm looking for help diagnosing a persistent issue on my 1998 Dodge Neon SOHC. I've been experiencing trouble with the engine temperature sensor and related fault codes. Initially, I received a code indicating low voltage or an issue with the rear oxygen sensor (second bay), though I no longer see that code. After replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT), the original code disappeared but was replaced by P0118. Following this, I had the wiring harness connector replaced — which cleared P0118 — only for a new code, P0117, to appear. Now, when the car cools down, it takes multiple attempts to start, and the temperature gauge has stopped working entirely. This behavior is very concerning, especially since I took it to a mechanic who didn't resolve the issue. I want to make sure I understand what's actually wrong before attempting any further repairs myself. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! ~ John

Both P0117 and P0-118 point to the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. The fact that your temperature gauge is not working adds further evidence of a faulty ECT sensor or related wiring issues. Recommended steps: 1) Inspect the ECT sensor itself — check for loose connections, corrosion, or damaged wiring. 2) Confirm whether you've already replaced the thermostat; if not, it should be checked and replaced as part of the diagnosis.

Yes, I had a hole in my radiator and have since replaced the radiator, thermostat, and hoses. I haven't yet inspected the wiring connections, but I'll update this thread as soon as I do a thorough check of the ECT sensor and its harness.
