1997 Chevrolet Z28 P1441 OBD-II Code: Evaporative Emission System Fault After Purge Solenoid Replacement

Model: 1997 z28 Fault Code: P1441 Posted: 2012-08-01 18:57

I recently purchased a 1997 Chevrolet Z28 and discovered a P144-1 diagnostic trouble code. I replaced the gas cap, but the code returned within a few days. Subsequently, I replaced the evaporative purge solenoid and cleared the code. However, after that, the vehicle will no longer start—though it previously ran normally. Fuel pressure is confirmed, and the engine starts briefly with starter fluid. The car now fails to crank properly under normal conditions. Could this be related to a wiring or system interference caused by the purge solenoid replacement? Any guidance on diagnosing or resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Begin by checking the Check Engine Light (CEL)—does it illuminate for approximately 2 seconds at startup and then turn off? Is the security light active? Have you re-scanned the vehicle's ECU to confirm the code is still present? Have you verified all underhood fuses, particularly those related to the evaporative emission system? Since replacing the purge solenoid resulted in a no-start condition, ensure that all connections were properly disconnected and reconnected during installation. For example, did you fully unplug the EVAP hose, harness, or any associated components before replacement? If possible, use a test light or digital multimeter to verify continuity and power at key EVAP system points—this may reveal an electrical fault that could explain the no-start issue.
