1997 Toyota Camry 3.0 V6 P0401 Code: How to Diagnose and Fix EGR System Issues

Model: 1997 Toyota Camry 3.0 V6 Fault Code: P0401 Posted: 2009-02-20 23:04

I'm experiencing a persistent P0401 code on my 1997 Toyota Camry 3.0 V6, and I'm looking for guidance on how to properly diagnose the EGR system issue. So far, I've replaced all three O2 sensors (both upstream and downstream), thoroughly cleaned the EGR valve, and replaced the EGR temperature sensor located at the top of the EGR assembly. Despite these efforts, the check engine light remains on after resetting the system. I haven't yet replaced the EGR Valve Solenoid (VSV) because I'm unsure which of the three VSVs is the correct one—there are three hidden behind the engine cover plastic panel as shown in the service diagrams. Can anyone provide clear instructions or diagnostic steps to identify and resolve this P0401 issue? Thank you for any advice, Ace.

The most likely cause is a clogged EGR port inside the intake manifold. Try removing the EGR valve and inspecting the port—check if there's significant carbon buildup. To test, remove the vacuum hose connected to the EGR valve and use your hand or a vacuum gauge to check for adequate vacuum. If the system shows weak or no vacuum, it may indicate a blocked passage. When the EGR port is obstructed, the engine can either stall or idle at around 70 or more RPMs. The simplest fix would be to remove the intake manifold and manually clean the EGR port with a wire brush or compressed air.
