1997 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 Backfiring and P0100 MAF Circuit Failure Code

Model: 1997 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 Fault Code: P0100 Posted: 2016-05-01 08:24

I own a 1997 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 with the 350ci LT1 engine. The vehicle is experiencing backfiring and has triggered a P0100 fault code indicating a Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor circuit failure. My primary concern is the low-RPM backfiring. I've recently replaced the headers, spark plugs, and ignition wires. While I suspect these modifications may have contributed, I'm wondering if my firing order could be incorrect — or if there's another underlying issue. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

The distributor timing is critical and must be properly set; incorrect timing can cause backfiring, especially at low RPMs.

If this vehicle has the LT1 engine, the distributor — particularly its secondary wiring — is a common source of issues after ignition component replacements. Always use an OBD-II scanner with live data capability (not just a basic code reader) to monitor real-time values such as misfire counts, fuel trims, oxygen sensor voltage, ECT, MAP, and MAF. This helps diagnose performance issues accurately. Additionally, if an oiled air filter (commonly known as a POS filter) is installed, it should be cleaned or replaced — dirty filters can interfere with the MAF sensor readings and trigger P0100 codes. *Note: VIN-specific details may affect exact behavior.
