1997 Honda Civic P0441 Fault: Excessive Fuel Consumption and EVAP System Diagnosis

Model: 1997 Honda Civic Fault Code: P0441 Posted: 2008-03-18 09:22

Hi everyone, I'm dealing with a 1997 Honda Civic that's throwing up a P0441 diagnostic code and is burning significantly more fuel than normal. Based on the symptoms, I suspect an issue with the evaporative (EVAP) system purge solenoid—located near the air filter and mounted on top of the throttle body. I tried disconnecting the purge hose from both the engine side and the charcoal canister side. When disconnected at the engine end, the RPMs became unstable and fluctuated. Disconnecting it from the canister side had no noticeable effect, and the car ran normally for about five minutes with no change in behavior. I'm wondering when the purge system should normally activate—does it start purging under specific conditions? This issue is quite puzzling, so any insights or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

The most likely cause of a P0441 code in this scenario is an EVAP system leak. Start by checking the gas cap and all EVAP system hoses for loose connections or damage. You can also perform a PID check to monitor purge command signals and long-term fuel trim values—this helps determine if the system is receiving proper commands. To test the EVAP system: loosen the gas cap, turn on the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp), and ensure the fuel tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 full. The EVAP self-test will only run after a vehicle has rested overnight. Additionally, inspect the purge solenoid and vapor lines—these can be hard to locate. Use soapy water or a smoking machine to pressurize the system; any visible leaks will become apparent during this test. Good luck with your diagnosis!
