Hello. My friend has a 1997 Ford Explorer 4.0L 4x4. Last night, while driving, the truck suddenly died. It starts fine but immediately shuts off when placed into Drive. The vehicle runs normally in Reverse or Neutral. I confirmed this behavior firsthand. Based on symptoms, it initially seems like the torque converter might be faulty. After connecting a scan tool, we retrieved Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1762. Any information about this code or potential fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Are you familiar with the transmission systems in this model? If not, it's advisable to consult a specialist experienced with Ford transmissions. There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) available for DTC P1760/P1762, TSB #03-22-10. Could you confirm whether the vehicle has a 4R70W or 5R55E transmission? Has the truck been tried in Manual gear (first or second)? Does the transmission fluid appear burnt or severely discolored? Did the Overdrive (O/D) light start flashing at any point during the incident?
