1997 BMW E39 540i P1174 and P1175 Fault Codes: Diagnosis and Solutions

Model: 1997 E39 BMW 540i Fault Code: P1175 Posted: 2008-04-11 12:30

Hello, I'm experiencing P1174 Fuel Trim Adaptation Additive Bank 1 Malfunction and P1175 Fuel Trim Adaptation Additive Bank 2 Malfunction on my 1997 BMW E39 54-0i with a 6-speed manual transmission. The vehicle starts easily, runs smoothly, and achieves excellent fuel efficiency. After resetting the check engine light using an Auto Enginuity scanner, the codes reappear consistently. I've checked the Bentley service manuals, but they do not include detailed diagnostic trees for these specific fault codes. Can anyone recommend a reliable source or database where I can find official BMW E39 540i OBD-II code troubleshooting procedures? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Consider cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) as a common fix for fuel trim issues in older BMWs like the E39 540i.

I'd like to know if Auto Enginuity is a reliable and worthwhile tool for diagnosing P1174/P1175 codes—especially since I'm seeing the same issue on my BMW E39. Does anyone have experience with it?

Always start by checking for vacuum leaks and other mechanical issues. Additionally, if you're using a K&N or similar air filter, consider removing it—BMW MAF sensors are sensitive to airflow changes and may misread values when used with aftermarket filters.
