1997 Dodge 4x4 P0500 Fault: Speed Sensor Issue and Cruise Control Failure

Model: 1997 dodge 4x4 Fault Code: P0500 Posted: 2016-07-13 22:06

I own a 1997 Dodge 4x4 with a 5.2L engine. Recently, both the speedometer and odometer stopped working, and my cruise control has also failed. I replaced the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) located on the middle of the transmission, but the speedometer remains non-functional. The check engine light is now showing fault code P0500. I'm looking for advice on how to diagnose and fix this issue. Any insights into possible causes or additional sensors that might be involved would be greatly appreciated.

It's important to confirm whether your transmission is a 42RE or 45RFE model, as this affects the wiring and sensor location. Until you're certain of the transmission type, it's advisable to inspect the rear of the transfer case for the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), which may be the actual source of the problem.

There is another electrical connector located on the rear of the transmission that could be related to the VSS signal. Make sure this plug is securely connected and not loose or damaged, as a poor connection can cause P0500 and speedometer failure.
