1997 Chevrolet K1500 P0102 and P0430 Fault Codes: Sluggish Performance & Power Loss at Low Fuel Levels

Model: 1997 Chevy k1500 Fault Code: P0102 Posted: 2007-05-05 00:22

Hi there, I recently purchased a 1997 Chevrolet K1500 with 95,000 miles on the odometer. A few days ago, the 'Service Engine Soon' light illuminated. Initially, no noticeable issues occurred, but over time the truck began exhibiting severe sluggishness and sudden power loss. On three separate occasions while driving, the vehicle lost all power and shut off unexpectedly. This behavior only happens when the fuel level is below a quarter of a tank—never when the tank is full. The issue occurs consistently during both day and night drives, ruling out timing or environmental factors. Diagnostic trouble codes detected: P0102 (Manifold Absolute Pressure or Vehicle Air Flow Sensor A Circuit Low Input) and P0430 (Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold - Bank 2). I'm seeking advice on how to diagnose and resolve these issues. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Brad

P0102 indicates a low input signal from either the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or Vehicle Air Flow (VAF) sensor A circuit. P0430 suggests reduced catalytic converter efficiency on Bank 2. Begin by cleaning the MAF sensor and inspecting its wiring connections and harness integrity. Monitoring the oxygen sensors can also help determine if the catalytic converter is failing. Consider replacing the MAF sensor as a first step, especially given the symptoms. Good luck—please update us on your progress.

Thanks for the response. Could low fuel levels be contributing to this issue? It only happens when the tank is below a quarter full.

Unlikely—unless there's an underlying fuel pressure or fuel volume issue, such as a faulty fuel pump or regulator, which would need further testing.

How can I check for low fuel pressure in my 1997 Chevrolet K1500?

Use a dedicated fuel pressure gauge connected to the fuel rail to measure pressure. Compare readings to manufacturer specifications under normal operating conditions.

Prioritize resolving the diagnostic codes—these are clear indicators of underlying system faults. Since this is a recently acquired vehicle, replacing the fuel filter as part of routine maintenance could also help improve performance and prevent further issues.
