1997 GMC Astro P0101 OBD2 Code: No Start Issue with Fuel Smell and Block Heater Solution

Model: 1997 Astro Fault Code: P0101 Posted: 2010-10-28 13:06

Hello everyone, I'm writing about my 1997 GMC Astro passenger van, which has accumulated 290,000 kilometers of service. The vehicle is a 2-wheel-drive model with minimal options—only air conditioning, tilt, and cruise control; no power windows or other features. I've been using a K&N air filter for the past 160,000 km and have consistently maintained the van properly. Recently, the check engine light has activated, and my OBD2 code reader displays P0101 (Mass Airflow Sensor Range/Performance Problem). The vehicle won't start under current conditions—approximately 35°F outside. It turns over easily, but I occasionally detect a faint gasoline odor. This issue has occurred before; in the past, simply plugging in a block heater for about one hour allowed the van to start normally. I'm seeking advice on how to diagnose and resolve this P0101-related no-start condition. Could it be related to fuel pressure or sensor malfunction? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Ian 1997 GMC Astro Calgary, AB, Canada

Please verify that the fuel pump and fuel filter are properly connected and functioning. A P0101 code typically indicates a mass airflow sensor issue, but it can also point to problems with fuel delivery or intake system leaks. Always check fuel pressure—low pressure may cause starting difficulties and a gas smell. Ensure the MAF sensor is clean and not obstructed, as contamination can trigger false readings.
