1996 Toyota Camry P0304 Misfire: Vibration, Stalling & Burning Smell - Solutions & Next Steps

Model: 1996 Toyota Camry Fault Code: P0304 Posted: 2007-01-16 14:06

Hi, I own a 1996 Toyota Camry with a V6 engine, 140,000 miles, automatic transmission. Over the past two weeks, I've been experiencing a recurring issue: when slowing down at traffic signals, the vehicle vibrates and stalls, accompanied by the engine check light coming on. Initial OBD2 scan showed P0304 and P171. I replaced the spark plug and ignition coil for cylinder 4, but the problem persisted. Subsequently, I replaced all six spark plugs and all six ignition coils. Despite these efforts, the vibration and stalling continue—especially during deceleration or when stopped. The current OBD2 code is only P030-4. Recently, I noticed a burning smell, which has raised my concern about potential internal engine issues. I'm now worried about driving the vehicle safely. What could be causing this misfire? Are there any other diagnostic steps or repairs I should consider? Thank you for your help, Mak

Perform a compression test to rule out mechanical engine issues such as worn piston rings or cylinder head problems. Also, confirm the brand and model of the spark plugs and ignition coils used during replacement—this information can help identify potential compatibility or quality-related causes.
