1996 Saturn Transmission Codes P0731-P0734: Causes and Fixes for Gear Ratio Errors

Model: 1996 SATURN Fault Code: P0731 Posted: 2007-07-19 10:08

I own a 1996 Saturn that is displaying transmission fault codes P0731, P0732, P0733, and P0734. These codes indicate issues with gear ratio sensing in the transmission. While I've read that faulty input and output sensors are common causes, I want to confirm whether replacing these sensors is sufficient to resolve the problem. Where are the input and output speed sensors located on a 1996 Saturn? If these sensors aren't repaired promptly, could this lead to further transmission damage or complete failure?

Does the speedometer function normally?

The speedometer works correctly, but the RPM gauge occasionally freezes. Additionally, when shifting into reverse, the transmission slams into gear unexpectedly.

Addressing these sensor issues promptly can prevent further transmission damage and avoid costly repairs down the line.
