P0720 Fault in 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 6-Cylinder: Misfire at 1500 RPM, Poor Fuel Economy

Model: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 6 cyl Fault Code: P0720 Posted: 2016-02-23 19:46

I own a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 6-cylinder engine. When idling at 1500 RPM on level ground, the vehicle experiences severe misfiring. The issue disappears when I accelerate to 2000 RPM. Additionally, I'm noticing excessive fuel consumption—like there's no limit. The only diagnostic code retrieved is P0720. What does this code mean exactly? Is it related to engine performance or transmission issues?

Are you using an OBD-II scanner? Avoid the key-on-off trick as it may not provide accurate readings. The P0720 code refers to the transmission output speed sensor—this could indicate a problem with transmission feedback, but there might be additional underlying issues. A reliable diagnostic tool is strongly recommended. Basic checks such as fuel pressure and leak-down test at crankshaft position (KOEO) should also be performed to rule out engine-related causes.
