And as well if your fuel pressure still bleeds off like that then you've got a leaking injector or fuel pressure regulator! It's called the fuel spider by some and it's a super common failure on alot of the GM trucks from that vintage! You can get a revised one that works excellent and improves on the design! It'd be the first thing I'd do on that truck!

Thanks for the reply, Jeff. Pot stirring welcome and appreciated! I actually spent some time reading the good stuff on Wells and wanted to get their parts but could not find a source in the Portland, OR area. And Rock auto lists Wells as if it's been bought by Airtex, I think. I really wanted to get Wells parts but Wells is playing hard to get online! (I suppose I'll find them all over the place after I send this). Learning about the fuel spider now! Thanks!

yeah Im not sure it was a takeover so much as a partnership! If u can find Mark hicks on youtube at Wells site he's on quite a bit and would likely be able to answer some questions about local dealers!

I got a bluetooth obd2 gizmo on ebay and loaded a few dubious free programs on the wife's laptop and got some new info: Currently running poorly with the following conditions: 03 fuel system status open loop 04 calculated load 5% 05 coolant temp 187 06 short term fuel trim bank 1 0% 07 long term fuel trim bank 1 6.3% 08 short term fuel trim bank 2 0% 09 long term fuel trim bank 2 6.3% 0B intake manifold abs pres 11.5 psi 0C RPM 999 0D Speed 0 0E Timing advance #1 cylinder -17 0F Intake Air Temp 59 10 Air Flow Rate 137 lb/min 11 Absolute Throttle Position 1.6% 14 O2 bank 1 sensor 1 0.005V-0.0% 15 O2 bank 1 sensor 2 0.045V-99.2% 16 O2 bank 1 sensor 3 0.050V-99.2% 18 O2 bank 2 sensor 1 0.625V-0.0% freeze frame P0300 random/multiple culinder misfire detected 03 fuel system status closed loop 04 calculated load 13.3% 05 coolant temp 167 06 short term fuel trim bank 1 50% 07 long term fuel trim bank 1 12.5% 08 short term fuel trim bank 2 -.8% 09 long term fuel trim bank 2 10.2% 0B intake manifold abs pres 18.9 psi 0C RPM 1473 0D Speed 17mpm 10 Air Flow Rate 371.43 lb/min Not sure what to make of all this data - I could venture a guess, but I'll appear wiser if I stay silent and let the experts speak! Thanks in advance for your wisdom!

Look at your fuel trim on bank 1 in your freeze frame! That's a lack of fuel!

Thanks, Jeff. That's what I thought I was seeing. Since it was only on bank 1, that's the smoking gun that points to the fuel spider, no? Can I refurbish my old spider (looks like 1 injector is failing to open, yes? Stuck closed or has the coil failed?) or do I need to go for the upgrade to the newer design? I'm willing to do either but I'm cheap! Gaskets required? Not anxious to battle the confines of the van but I hear it's good to lose a little blood now and then. Discover more Ram Dodge Ram 1500 OBD Codes Here's what I don't get. The engine is running horribly now, and in open loop. I haven't cleared the codes since installing the new bluetooth thingy and the open loop trims are stable at 6.3 long term and 0 short term. Does that mean that open loop masks the fuel trim issue? I'm going to clear the codes and get another freeze frame to verify a repeat. Also, my O2 bank 1 sensor 1 is unresponsive. New sensor required, yes? bank 2 sensor 1 is erratic - sometimes it says .6V, sometimes it says 0.0v. It changes at random when the engine is idling and up to temp. New sensor required, yes? The other 2 read 99.2%. Is that a good number? sensor 3 is after the cat, true? 7308 posts so far for you. Wow - That's a lot of free help to this community. Thank you!

Okay so lets think about this for a minute! If the fuel pressure regulator was leaking the pressure off my opinion is that it would have black smoke, long crank time and the short term fuel trims would be trying to remove fuel so it'd be a negative number not a positive like 50%. Think of a garden hose and a sprayer on the end with a trigger, crack the tap and it only dribbles trigger pulled all the way! Now the pump is the tap and the nozzle is your injectors! It can only spray what it's given and without enough water volume the nozzle has to be held way open just to get a drip, the fuel trim number is the pcm's measurement of the attempt to spay enough fuel out of the nozzle to keep the air fuel ration as close to stoich as it can! If the regulator was leaking what you'd see would be a short term number of high negatives, like you shut the tap off but the nozzle is still dripping and the pcm is trying to turn it off because it's too rich and stoich is all messed up because of it! So u see fuel pressure is critical especially on that design! yeah if you think u have bad injector get the whole assembly that's been updated and u'll never have to do it again! but before we go that far u say bank 1's upstream 02 isn't switching off at all? That would be something to investigate first, Get an A/C delco sensor, no other brand and try it, it's easier than the injector or heck if u want take the sensor out of bank 1 and swap it with the sensor in bank 2 and then redrive it, is the fuel trims messed up now on 2? If so then the 02 is junk, just be warned taking them on and trying to reinstall them sometimes winds up destroying them if if one is bad on a v style engine I'd suggest replacing both if they haven't been done already! i mean maybe you'll get real lucky and just have a wiring repair for the 02 circuit and that's free except for your time!

cleared the codes and got another p0300 shortly thereafter. freeze frame showed the same +50% bank 1 fuel trim. The only significant difference I noted was that it was idling @850 and the timing advance was at 21 instead of the earlier 17. Does that advance mean anything? Looks like I need the new spider? What gaskets/brackets/seals do I need to complete this (I live in the boonies - do my shoppin' online so want to order EVERYTHING I might need) I have a 4 O2 sensor setup - first 3 pre cat then a post cat sensor. some are AFS-95 and others AFS105. Do you remember which ones are which in case I buy 4? Which one is used for bank 1 sensor 1?

Use youtube to find a video of the spider install, a guy named briansmobile has an excellent one and Rockauto is an excellent place to order online parts, not sure about 02 part numbers! I'd call a gm dealer to get the correct numbers! Some may even ship! It's the upstream that's responsible for fuel control, downstream are for catalyst monitor
