P1443 OBD2 Fault Code on 1996 Ford Thunderbird: Causes, Diagnosis, and Repair Guide

Model: 1996 Ford Thunderbird Fault Code: P1443 Posted: 2005-04-28 17:02

I own a 1996 Ford Thunderbird that is displaying the P1443 diagnostic trouble code. I'd like to resolve this issue before it leads to more serious engine or emission problems. Can anyone explain what P1443 means and what steps I should take to diagnose and fix it? Specifically, where are the relevant components located in a 1996 Thunderbird? Thanks for any insight. kylove2@bellsouth.net

I have a 1996 Lincoln Continental with a 4.6L, 32-valve engine and am also seeing P1443. The repair manual indicates that this code points to an EVAP canister purge valve issue—possibly due to a faulty solenoid, a leak, or blockage between the intake manifold, purge valve, and EVAP canister. On my Continental model, the purge valve is located near or on the driver's side shock tower. I've noticed a slight increase in fuel consumption—about 1–2 MPG more than normal. I'm still unsure how to pinpoint the exact root cause or proceed with repairs. It would be helpful if users could share the most common reasons (e.g., 9 out of 10 cases) for this code appearing.
