1996 Ford Taurus V6 P0402 Code: Rough Idle, Hesitation - Causes & Fixes

Model: 1996 Ford Taurus Fault Code: P0402 Posted: 2010-12-15 23:45

Hi everyone, I just brought home my 1996 Ford Taurus with a V6 engine and pulled up the diagnostic code P0402. The car is exhibiting rough idle and hesitation during driving. After some research, I've learned that the Diesel Particulate Filter Emission (DPFE) sensor is a common cause of this issue, along with potential vacuum leaks or clogged components. Since it's currently dark, I haven't been able to inspect under the hood thoroughly. I plan to check for these issues this Saturday during daylight hours. I'd like to confirm: 1) Am I on the right track diagnosing P0402? 2) Are there any additional troubleshooting tips or steps I should consider? 3) Is it necessary to use dealer-grade parts for DPFE or EGR repairs, or are high-quality aftermarket alternatives acceptable? Thanks in advance for your insights! — Gerry

The vehicle has just over 100k miles and I'm unsure about the last tune-up or maintenance performed. This could be a factor in the current symptoms.

I personally prefer dealer parts for engine sensors and spark plugs, as they often match the quality of aftermarket options. In many cases, dealer pricing on ignition wire sets is comparable to top-tier aftermarket products. For your P0402 issue, a faulty DPFE sensor is likely — consider cleaning the throttle body as well; it might resolve the hesitation and idle problems.
