1996 Ford Explorer P0340 Code: Causes, Fixes, and Smog Inspection Solution

Model: 1996 Ford Explorer Fault Code: P0340 Posted: 2012-01-28 15:48

I own a 1996 Ford Explorer with a 5.0L V8 engine, automatic transmission, and 2WD. I'm currently experiencing a P0340 diagnostic trouble code. The vehicle starts and runs smoothly under normal conditions, and the check engine light is not causing any noticeable performance issues. However, I need to pass a smog inspection in California, which requires the check engine light to be off. Since the P0340 code remains active, I'm seeking reliable solutions to resolve this issue without costly repairs. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, MandoG

I encountered the same P0340 code on my 1996 Ford Ranger. I replaced the spark plugs, ignition wires, and coil pack. However, when I took it back to a repair shop, they quoted $700 for repairs—quite high. Unexpectedly, upon returning the vehicle, I found that spark plug number 4 was partially unscrewed, with fuel leaking into the cylinder, causing rough idle and engine shutdowns. This situation highlights how critical proper diagnosis is before any repair work begins.
