OBD-II P0401 Code Explanation for 1996 Ford 302 Bronco - Exhaust EGR Flow Insufficient
I'm looking for clarification on what the OBD-II P0401 code means on my 1996 Ford 302 Bronco. My code-key reader displays 'exhaust' as the related system. Can anyone explain the technical meaning and possible causes of this fault code?
P0401 indicates insufficient EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) flow. Possible causes include a faulty EGR valve, loss of vacuum source, or clogged EGR passages. To diagnose: remove the EGR valve and observe engine behavior. If the engine fails to idle or runs roughly, the passages are likely open; if it idles smoothly, the passages may be clogged. Also inspect the vacuum line connected to the valve for cracks or breaks. If you have a vacuum pump, apply vacuum to the valve while the engine is running—properly functioning valves will cause the engine to stall or nearly stall.
