I own a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.9L V8 engine, 4-wheel drive, and over 150,000 miles. The check engine light is on, and I've received diagnostic code P0171, which indicates a lean air-fuel mixture in the intake system. The vehicle idles roughly and very low, but runs smoothly at highway speeds. Can anyone provide guidance on how to diagnose and fix this P0171 code? Thanks for your help.

Could be low fuel pressure — check the fuel pump and fuel filter. Also, verify if the oxygen sensor is switching properly.

I recommend starting with a vacuum leak inspection, followed by checking for exhaust leaks. Code P0171 is a lean mixture code — these two issues are common causes and should be addressed first. Do you have access to an OBD-II scanner?
