P0420 Fault Diagnosis and Repair Advice for 1996 Ford Bronco 5.0L with 5-Speed Transmission

Model: 1996 Bronco 5.0 Fault Code: P0420 Posted: 2009-12-05 16:36

Hi everyone, I'm currently dealing with a P0420 diagnostic code on my 1996 Ford Bronco equipped with a 5.0L V8 engine and 5-speed manual transmission. The code indicates 'Catalytic Converter Efficiency Below Threshold'. I took the vehicle to a local muffler shop, where they suggested that the issue might be caused by a faulty oxygen sensor located just behind the first catalytic converter. They inspected the converter itself and stated it appears full and structurally intact internally. Their recommendation was to replace the catalytic converter for $280 — which I found reasonable, but I'm hesitant to spend that much if the root cause is actually the O2 sensor. Given that I don't want to pay for a replacement converter unnecessarily, I'm seeking input from other owners or mechanics who have faced this same issue. Is there any way to accurately diagnose whether it's the oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter at fault? Any testing methods or diagnostic tips? Thanks in advance, Biederboat

The P0420 code is almost always related to a faulty oxygen sensor, not the catalytic converter itself. However, it's important to be cautious when choosing lower-priced catalytic converters — cheaper replacements often fail to resolve the issue and may even cause further problems. A proper diagnosis using O2 sensor readings or a scan tool should confirm whether the sensor is malfunctioning before investing in a costly replacement.
