1996 Blazer 4x4 P0133 O2 Sensor Issue: Loss of Power, Poor Fuel Economy & Engine Running Hot

Model: 1996 Blazer 4x4 Fault Code: P0133 Posted: 2007-04-23 14:22

I own a 1996 Blazer LT 4x4 with a 4.3L V6 engine (135,000 miles). Recently, the vehicle has developed significant performance issues including a noticeable lack of power and poor fuel economy—feeling like it's only running at about 50-80% of normal capacity. I also detect a smell indicating the engine may be overheating. The check engine light triggered with code P0133: 'O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1, Sensor 1)'. This indicates a sluggish oxygen sensor, likely affecting fuel-air mixture and causing inefficient combustion. I’ve already performed several maintenance actions: - Flushed the radiator (first time I noticed it had never been done before) - Replaced the fuel filter and ran fuel injector cleaner through the tank - Replaced the radiator cap due to low pressure retention; a small coolant leak occurred when warm, but combustion gas testing in coolant came back negative - Performed a full transmission service These steps improved performance for about one week before symptoms returned. The engine now fluctuates between 70% and 90% of normal power—sometimes running fine, other times extremely sluggish. When accelerating from a stop, I hear a brief metal-on-metal clunk noise, which may point to transmission issues. I replaced the spark plugs, which showed signs of lean combustion (especially in the rear left cylinder). After replacement, performance improved slightly but remained inconsistent. I also replaced the thermostat and flushed the radiator again. Despite these efforts, the problem persists. My current hypothesis is that the P013 or 'lazy' O2 sensor is causing an improper air-fuel mixture, leading to poor power delivery and overheating symptoms. I suspect that a previous service at Jiffy Lube may have misfilled transmission fluid—excess fluid could cause pressure issues and contribute to performance degradation. I’m trying to sell this vehicle and need it to run reliably. Any advice on diagnosing or fixing the P0133 issue, especially which sensor to replace, would be greatly appreciated.

P0133 – O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1, Sensor 1). This sensor is located upstream of the catalytic converter, closest to the exhaust manifold on the driver’s side. A slow response can lead to poor fuel mixture and reduced engine power. When purchasing a used vehicle, it's crucial to trust reputable dealerships—brands like GM, Ford, or Chrysler typically perform better pre-sale inspections and repairs. Overfilling transmission fluid can cause pressure issues and affect shifting performance. The metal-on-metal clunk during acceleration may originate in the transmission. Replacing the O2 sensor should restore proper fuel delivery and improve engine responsiveness. I recommend checking all fluid levels—engine oil, transmission fluid, and coolant—to ensure they are within optimal ranges and address any imbalances.

In a 1996 Blazer 4.3L V6 engine, Bank 1 refers to the driver’s side (where cylinder #1 is located), and Sensor 1 is the upstream oxygen sensor, positioned closest to the exhaust manifold—just before the catalytic converter.
