P0174 and P0171 Fault Codes in 1995 Ford Windstar - Check Engine Light, Fuel Smell, Rough Idle

Model: 1995 Windstar Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2007-05-26 08:28

I own a 1995 Ford Windstar that has been displaying a persistent check engine light. I've already replaced the oxygen sensor, fuel filter, and air filter. The vehicle now emits a strong fuel odor, runs roughly, and exhibits sluggish acceleration during driving. I recently cleaned the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor using an electronic cleaner with no improvement. Given these symptoms—especially the fuel smell and rough idle—I'm wondering if there could be another underlying issue. Any advice or diagnostic steps would be greatly appreciated.

Intake gasket leaks are a common cause of P0174 and P0171 codes in 1995 Ford Windstar models. Many forum discussions and TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) confirm that leaking intake gaskets can lead to fuel vapor entering the engine, causing rich mixtures, poor idle, and a noticeable fuel smell. Try spraying Brake Kleen around the intake manifold while the engine is running—any change in idle stability may indicate a leak. While fuel pressure, EGR, and MAF sensors should be ruled out first, the intake gasket remains one of the most likely culprits. Dealerships often provide TSBs on this issue; you can also search online for '1995 Ford Windstar intake gasket leak TSB' to locate them. Good luck—please update if you find a resolution.
